Bien-Air
Bien-Air’s story began in Moutier, Switzerland, in the heart of the region known as the “Watch Valley”. It was there, during a conversation in a local café, that precision mechanic and entrepreneur David Mosimann heard a dentist describe the shortcomings of the rotary instruments available at the time. Recognising an opportunity to make dental procedures more efficient and improve the everyday experience of practitioners, Mosimann began designing and manufacturing his own handpieces. What started as a small project soon developed into something much greater, leading to the establishment of Bien-Air in Bienne in 1959.
As its expertise and technology developed, Bien-Air recognised opportunities beyond dentistry. The company expanded into the manufacture of specialised medical instruments, applying its knowledge of precision engineering to ENT, plastic, and neurosurgery. In 2001, it formally separated its dental and microsurgery activities, creating two dedicated divisions: Dental and Surgery.
This growth was accompanied by a continued commitment to innovation and to making practitioners’ work simpler and more efficient. Over the years, they’ve continued to develop rotary instruments and medical systems designed to be innovative, reliable and straightforward to use.
In 1994, Vincent Mosimann, son of founder David Mosimann, took over the leadership of Bien-Air. Under his direction, the company maintained its family-owned character while remaining true to his father’s philosophy of developing solutions that simplify the everyday work of healthcare professionals.
Today, Bien-Air is headquartered in Bienne, Switzerland, with two production and assembly sites in Noirmont, as well as eight subsidiaries. The company employs more than 400 people worldwide. Combining Swiss engineering expertise with a strong international presence, the company continues to focus on innovative and reliable products, high-quality distribution and responsive customer service. These strengths have helped establish the company as a leading specialist in rotary instruments and medical systems.
